1876年，美国有一位安娜查维斯夫人想创立一个母亲节，1907年5月12日，安得烈卫理教堂，应安娜之邀请，为母亲举行一个礼拜仪式，1910年在维州州长支持下宣布设立母亲节，1911年庆祝母亲节活动，美、墨、加等国家响应庆祝母亲节。往后的母亲节定为每年5月的第二个星期天，以示对母亲的尊崇。
